Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has reassured farmers across the state that there are no plans to evict them to make way for mining operations, following concerns raised by farming communities.
In a statement released yesterday, Governor Adeleke addressed the alarm raised by farmers over recent activities observed on farmlands, clarifying that the movements were related to a state-sanctioned mineral mapping project, not mining preparations.
“The presence of officials on farmlands is part of an ongoing statewide solid minerals survey, which includes soil testing and mapping,” the statement explained. “This initiative, approved by the Governor, aims to identify and document Osun’s natural resources to better harness the state’s economic potential.”
Governor Adeleke emphasised that there is currently no approved mining activity in the areas of concern and urged residents to cooperate with state officials conducting the survey.
“Our Governor values the contributions of the farming community and will not support any action that could harm their livelihoods,” the statement continued. “Farmers are therefore encouraged to continue their activities peacefully.”
The Governor’s assurance comes amid fears that farmlands could be repurposed for mineral exploitation, prompting protests in some localities. Adeleke’s administration reiterated its commitment to protecting residents while promoting sustainable development.
