The Oyo State Government has officially launched a joint task force aimed at clamping down on illegal mining operations, enforcing the recently established Executive Order 001/2023.
This development was announced in a statement issued on Monday in Ibadan by the state’s Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Dotun Oyelade.
The formal inauguration of the task force took place at Iseyin City Hall, drawing a wide range of attendees, including government officials, traditional rulers, community stakeholders, and security operatives.
During the event, Abiodun Oni, Director-General of the Oyo State Mineral Development Agency (OYSMIDA), made it clear that the state would no longer tolerate unauthorised mining activities. He warned that anyone found engaging in illegal operations would face legal consequences, stressing that the full weight of the law would be applied.

Oni said the launch of the task force marked a significant step towards eliminating unlawful mining and enforcing compliance with existing regulations. He called on residents to play a role in the effort by reporting any suspicious activity, encouraging a community-driven approach with the slogan: “If you see something, say something.”
He also expressed gratitude to Governor Seyi Makinde for his proactive leadership and consistent commitment to protecting both the lives of citizens and the state’s mineral wealth.
Speaking at the event, the General Manager of OYSMIDA, Mrs Olufunke Omidiran, described the formation of the task force as a strategic response to the rising challenges posed by illegal mining in Oyo. She highlighted that the unit is adequately equipped and focused on enforcing sustainable mining practices and promoting environmental responsibility.
