The Osun State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has dismantled an illegal mining site in the state. The operation, which took place on Friday, 31 January 2025, was led by the State Commandant, CC Igbalawole Sotiyo, at the Sambisa area in Kajola, Atakumosa West Local Government.
In a statement released on Saturday, NSCDC spokesperson ASC Kehinde Adeleke revealed that the site was discovered following intelligence gathering and surveillance efforts. Sotiyo stated that a suspect apprehended at the site admitted to operating without the necessary licences or authorisation. He reiterated the NSCDC’s commitment to eradicating illegal mining and safeguarding the nation’s solid mineral resources. He also issued a stern warning to those engaged in such unlawful activities, urging them to desist.

During the raid, several mining tools, including draglines and pumping machines, were destroyed. While one suspect was arrested and is set to face legal action, others managed to escape, abandoning their equipment. The NSCDC has assured that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing individuals.
Sotiyo called on the public to report any illegal mining activities in their communities, stressing the importance of collective efforts in preventing environmental degradation and economic losses caused by unregulated mining.
