President Emmerson Mnangagwa has called for the rapid integration of advanced technology into Zimbabwe’s mining sector, emphasising its role in enhancing the exploration and extraction of mineral resources to stimulate economic growth. He made these statements during the commissioning of a segment of the Palm River Energy project in Beitbridge on Monday.
The President stressed that the efficient extraction of high-value minerals through the adoption of cutting-edge technology is vital for unlocking the country’s untapped mineral potential, which can serve as a significant driver of economic progress.
He further highlighted the need for collaboration among key stakeholders in the mining industry, including higher education institutions and professional bodies, to foster sustainable mining practices. President Mnangagwa specifically pointed to the partnership between Shanxi Engineering Vocational College and Harare Polytechnic, which is set to contribute to the training of young people in the mining sector.

The President also revealed that the project will offer scholarships for students to study in China in various engineering disciplines, such as metallurgy, mechanical, and electrical engineering.
In addition, there are plans for the establishment of a Metallurgical Centre of Excellence, which will focus on value addition and beneficiation. President Mnangagwa encouraged other institutions like the Zimbabwe School of Mines to pursue similar partnerships.
In line with the African Mining Vision, the President reaffirmed the importance of mineral value addition as a means to ensure Zimbabwe maximises its natural resource potential. He also emphasised that efforts should be made to boost exports, create jobs, diversify the economy, reduce reliance on raw commodity prices, advance technology, and enhance local infrastructure development.
Zimbabwe continues to focus on its mineral wealth as a strategic approach to fostering economic growth and expansion.
