Lafarge Africa Plc has successfully trained 25 geoscientists and mining engineers in Ogun State, strengthening the country’s mining sector through operational excellence and capacity development.
The three-day capacity-building programme took place at the company’s Training Centre in Ewekoro and was conducted in collaboration with the Ogun State Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment. The programme included hands-on learning, technical exposure, and insights into industry best practices.
Engr. Philip Anaobi, the plant manager, reaffirmed Lafarge’s commitment to enhancing workforce skills in Nigeria’s mining sector, emphasizing the company’s focus on sustainable growth. Participants took part in expert-led sessions covering mining best practices, safety protocols, raw materials management, sustainability, and community engagement.

The programme also featured a tour of the Lafarge Ewekoro Quarry, allowing participants to observe mining operations and environmental conservation efforts firsthand. Prof. Jimoh Ajadi, a guest trainer from Kwara State University, emphasized the importance of continuous learning in the evolving mining industry.
Gabriel Pollyn, Lafarge’s Head of Sustainability and Sponsorships, highlighted the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainability through initiatives like waste recycling and eco-friendly cement solutions.
Engr. Oluyomi Owolabi, the Community Relations Manager, also presented Lafarge’s community relations model, which includes collaborations with 14 host communities to foster long-term partnerships and contribute to education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
One of the participants, Emmanuel Okechukwu, expressed his gratitude for the hands-on experience and insights gained, which he believes will enhance industry operations and sustainability practices.
