National Commissioner Fanie Masemola shared this development during a media briefing on Sunday, where he also highlighted the progress of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in their #SaferFestiveSeason operations. The officers, who were detained by the SAPS anti-corruption unit in the North West province, appeared in court on Friday and were granted bail of R1,000 each. Their next court appearance is scheduled for 5 March 2025.

Following the revelation of Tiger’s escape, the North West police commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, initiated an investigation led by experienced detectives and crime intelligence operatives to uncover the details of the escape. A manhunt is currently underway to capture Tshoaeli once again.

Masemola confirmed that the four officers have been removed from Operation Vala Umgodi and that internal disciplinary procedures are in motion. The outcome of the court case will likely reveal the extent of the officers’ involvement in aiding Tiger and the illegal mining operations. The officers’ supervisor is still deliberating on whether suspension is warranted.

Despite authorities clearing the area, there have been reports of illegal miners emerging from underground, sparking concerns. Masemola addressed these claims, clarifying that the SAPS is not responsible for mining operations and was not equipped to conduct underground searches. In the past fortnight, some individuals have surfaced from the Margaret Shaft, appearing healthy and unscathed. These individuals are currently under investigation, and further details are expected.

Deputy National Commissioner Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili reiterated that the SAPS will continue to monitor and take action against illegal mining activities, particularly in the seven mining provinces. The ongoing success of Operation Vala Umgodi, which began in December 2023, has already led to 18,000 arrests, many of them illegal immigrants. Law enforcement has also seized substantial amounts of firearms, ammunition, trucks, and heavy machinery associated with illegal mining.

Since August 2024, over 7,700 illegal miners have been arrested in Stilfontein alone, with many still in police custody. The SAPS has also coordinated with the Department of Home Affairs to deport over 120 foreign nationals involved in illegal mining activities. The Department of Health is conducting autopsies, with SAPS assistance, to identify human remains recovered from mining sites.
