Police in Mpumalanga have arrested thirteen individuals for alleged illegal mining activities in the Simile informal settlement, located in Sabie, over the Easter weekend.
The suspects, aged between 18 and 35, were apprehended on Friday while reportedly carrying out mining operations without the necessary permits. Further inquiries revealed that none of the individuals held valid forms of identification, resulting in additional charges under South Africa’s Immigration Act.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Mpho Nonyane, confirmed the arrests and stated that illegal mining equipment was also confiscated at the scene.
“The suspects were caught in the act, and during their arrest, our officers seized a range of illicit mining tools. They are now facing charges related to illegal mining and immigration violations,” said Nonyane.
All thirteen individuals are scheduled to appear before the Sabie Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 22 April 2025.
