Kogi State has taken a bold step into Nigeria’s solid minerals arena as Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo officially unveiled new mining equipment and announced the acquisition of fifteen mining licences by the state government.
Speaking at the unveiling ceremony held at Muhammadu Buhari Square in Lokoja on Friday, Governor Ododo said the twin development marked a turning point in Kogi’s economic transformation.
“This is a strategic move to harness our natural resources and reduce our reliance on federal allocations. The 15 licenses secured will allow Kogi to begin large-scale exploration and mining, ensuring sustainable economic growth,” the Governor stated.
He emphasised that Kogi is endowed with over 30 solid minerals in commercial quantities, including gold, lithium, limestone, and coal, which remain largely untapped.
“We are ready to harness the full potential of our natural resources. Kogi will no longer wait for federal allocations but will take its future into its own hands through this mining initiative,” he added.
Governor Ododo assured that the state is committed to creating job opportunities and improving livelihoods, noting that the mining equipment will facilitate efficient extraction and processing of mineral resources.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, Engr. Bashiru Gegu, highlighted the administration’s readiness to position Kogi as a key revenue-generating state through solid mineral development.
“Being a major player in the mining sector requires equipment, laws, and policies. We are prepared to meet these requirements,” he stated.
He confirmed that the Kogi State Solid Mineral Processing Company Limited had secured the 15 mining licences, paving the way for immediate exploration activities.
