The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested 29 individuals for their alleged involvement in illegal mining and vandalism in Bauchi State.
Speaking in Bauchi, State Commandant Oloyede Oyerinde disclosed that the suspects were apprehended following intelligence-led operations around Waya Dam, located 40 kilometres from Bauchi metropolis. He explained that illegal mining in the area had led to serious environmental degradation, land encroachment, and increased security risks, negatively impacting socio-economic activities.
According to Oyerinde, the arrests were made during a raid conducted on January 5, based on credible intelligence. He noted that the crackdown was part of the NSCDC’s ongoing efforts to curb illegal mining and its associated dangers.

During the operation, security personnel recovered various tools and equipment, including three motorcycles, six wheelbarrows, 15 shovels, five diggers, three hoes, an axe, a cutlass, a sand net, two water hose pipes, and a water pumping machine.
In a separate operation, NSCDC personnel also arrested a suspect for allegedly vandalising and stealing armoured cables from the Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Tomb in Bauchi. Officers recovered a handsaw and pieces of the stolen armoured cables from the suspect. The commandant stressed that the agency remains committed to protecting critical national assets and infrastructure, ensuring that those involved in criminal activities face the full weight of the law.
Oyerinde reaffirmed the NSCDC’s resolve to safeguard the environment, prevent economic sabotage, and maintain law and order across Bauchi State. He urged residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing information that could help in the fight against illegal activities.
