The Ministry of Solid Minerals, under the Federal Mines Officers’ aegis, has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to aid in tackling illegal mining, a critical challenge affecting Nigeria’s mining sector and its environment.
During a courtesy visit to the EFCC Port Harcourt Zonal Directorate on 21 November 2024, the Port Harcourt branch president, Engineer Naku Romos, highlighted the economic and ecological damages caused by unregulated mining activities, particularly in the Niger Delta. “Illegal miners engage in activities that not only drain the country’s economy but also devastate an already fragile ecosystem,” Romos stated.
Romos, who assumed office in September 2024, emphasised the Ministry’s duty to regulate and control mining activities in Nigeria. He lamented the economic losses caused by illegal mining, asserting that effective enforcement required collaboration with law enforcement agencies, including the EFCC, Police, and DSS.
EFCC’s Commitment to Addressing Illegal Mining
The Acting Director of the EFCC Port Harcourt Zonal Directorate, Adebayo Adeniyi, assured the Ministry of the EFCC’s readiness to collaborate. He revealed that addressing illegal mining is a key priority for the Commission, with Executive Chairman Ola Olukoyede setting up a Special Task Force to tackle these issues across Nigeria. Adeniyi disclosed that the Port Harcourt Directorate is already investigating several cases of illegal mining.
To address the problem effectively, Adeniyi suggested the Ministry initiate enlightenment campaigns for miners, many of whom might unknowingly engage in illegal activities. “Enlightenment is crucial. Educate the miners on the requirements, and if they persist, report to us. We will ensure that illegal exploitation of natural resources and environmental degradation are halted,” Adeniyi stated.
A Coordinated Approach to Protect Nigeria’s Resources
The EFCC pledged an “aggressive posture” against illegal mining in the Niger Delta, promising to prosecute offenders while supporting the Ministry’s efforts. This coordinated approach aims to safeguard Nigeria’s natural resources and promote sustainable mining practices, ensuring environmental protection and economic growth.
