A mining site collapse on Saturday killed at least 13 people in Bassa Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State. Dr. Joshua Riti, Chairman of Bassa LGA, confirmed the tragedy and expressed deep sorrow over the high death toll.

The collapse of the mining site devastated the community, especially in Bassa, where seven of the victims lived. The site lies at the borders of Bassa, Jos South, and Jos North LGAs.

Dr. Riti mourned the young victims, describing them as hardworking individuals who sought ways to support themselves amid economic hardship.

“They went out to put their energies to good use to sustain and meet up with the current economic hardship in the country but met their untimely death,” he said, offering condolences to the grieving families.

Most of the deceased were between 18 and 30, underscoring the deep loss felt by the community, especially among its younger generation.
