The GIN President, and first Deputy President, Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), Prof. Adesoji Adesugba, during the signing, said the MoU would leverage the expertise of both parties to build the Mining Industry. “The agreement aims to leverage the combined expertise and resources of both institutions to foster innovation, research and skills development in the fields of geology, gemology and mining.

    The University of Abuja and the Gemological Institute of Nigeria (GIN) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen the mining sector. 

    The partnership seeks to establish a formal collaboration between GIN and the Department of Gemology and Mining at the University of Abuja. 

    By integrating the strengths, the two institutions aspire to create a unified platform for geoscience education, gemologyand mining research and training in the mining industry. The cooperation aims to construct the foremost School of Mines in Nigeria, foster a strong mining business line in the private sector, and fortify the solid minerals sector by providing academic and practical training. In his words, the program also sought to support Nigeria’s goal of economic diversification by fostering environmentally friendly mining methods and opening up the world market for indigenous jewellery and gemstones.

    He reaffirmed the institutions’ shared commitment to maintaining the highest standards of confidentiality and quality assurance throughout the collaboration. He added that amicable negotiation will be the first step in resolving any disagreements resulting from the agreement, with arbitration serving as a last resort.

    Prof. Abdul-Rasheed, the university’s vice-chancellor Onbehalf of the School, conveyed gratitude for the honour of being the first institution in Nigeria to provide gemologycourses.

    Na’Allah underlined the Institution’s commitment to improving the students’ training capacity while extending his support for the centre.

    “The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishes the foundation for a revolutionary partnership between GIN and our university, which could stimulate economic growth, entrepreneurship, and innovation in Nigeria’s mining industry over a five-year period,” he stated.
