President Bola Tinubu called for establishing an anti-illegal mining group among African nations during the 11th Session of the Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission (BNC) in Cape Town, South Africa. He emphasised that Africa’s natural resources should benefit its people and not be exploited illegally.

Tinubu highlighted the severe impact of illegal mining, describing it as “inland piracy.” He noted that it deprives nations of critical income, fosters instability, and undermines legitimate governance. He attributed much of the illegal mining activity to external forces, which he said perpetuate poverty, servitude, and environmental degradation.

“African nations must not allow this inland piracy to derail our aspirations,” Tinubu stated. He urged Nigeria and South Africa to lead efforts in addressing this issue globally and finding sustainable solutions for the continent.

The president also emphasized strengthening Nigeria’s partnership with South Africa, calling for a united front to enhance Africa’s global influence. With South Africa assuming the presidency of the G20, Tinubu urged both nations to leverage this position for the continent’s advancement.

“Nigeria seeks to join South Africa and the African Union in the G20 to amplify Africa’s voice globally,” Tinubu said, advocating for collaborative leadership between the two countries.

He described the relationship between Nigeria and South Africa as a model of strategic partnership, capable of fostering prosperity and development across Africa. “This partnership must inspire a brighter future for our continent,” Tinubu stated, referring to Nigeria’s historic support for South Africa during its fight against apartheid.

The session addressed various issues, including youth development, economic integration, and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Tinubu stressed the importance of addressing challenges to ensure the success of these initiatives, adding, “The continent looks to us, and we cannot afford to fail.”

Tinubu concluded by urging unity and focus, encouraging all parties to work towards transforming Africa’s narrative and achieving a prosperous future. The 11th Session of the BNC reinforced the commitment of Nigeria and South Africa to tackle shared challenges and drive economic and social development across Africa.
