The House of Representatives has ordered the immediate removal of illegal foreign miners from mining sites across Cross River State, directing the Army, Police, and the Department of State Services (DSS) to take action.
The directive followed a motion of urgent public importance by Hon. Alex Egbona, representing Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency. Egbona raised concerns over the growing presence of illegal miners, suspected to be from the Sahel region of West Africa, who have reportedly invaded Agoi Ekpo, Agom Ibami, and Ekom Agoi communities in Yakurr Local Government Area.
Speaking before lawmakers, Egbona warned that these foreign miners pose serious threats to local residents, with their unregulated activities leading to security risks, environmental degradation, and the depletion of natural resources.

“The people of these communities are living in fear due to the presence of these invaders who operate illegally and pose serious security risks. Their unregulated mining activities also contribute to environmental degradation, loss of biodiversity, and depletion of natural resources, which could have long-term consequences for the affected communities,” he stated.
The House condemned the invasion, stressing that the presence of armed foreign miners violates Nigeria’s territorial integrity and threatens the livelihoods of local inhabitants. Lawmakers urged the federal government to restore order and support legal mining operations without interference.
Additionally, the House directed its committees on Army, Police, National Security, and Solid Minerals to investigate the invasion and report back with recommendations within four weeks for further legislative action.
