Ongoing conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) could disrupt the global supply of tantalum, a critical mineral used in electronics such as smartphones, laptops, and AI systems. A recent UN report reveals that the trade of tantalum, alongside gold and tin, is linked to armed groups responsible for widespread human rights abuses in the region.
Kyle Pronk, a research analyst at Project Blue, explained in an interview with MINING.COM that unlike the southern parts of the country, where industries like copper mining are more prominent, the tantalum market is concentrated in Congo’s conflict-ridden north.

The DRC was responsible for 42% of global tantalum production in 2024, with the U.S. relying on Congo for 12% of its tantalum imports.
The risks associated with these supply chains raise concerns about the ethical sourcing of minerals critical to modern technology.
