One of the key operations took place in the Jagula/Okolom area of Yagba East Local Government Area (LGA) in Kogi State. Led by Commander ACC Attah John Onoja, the Special Mining Marshals carried out a strategic clearance mission to expel illegal miners and bandits who had plagued the area for over a decade. Despite being under the mineral title of North-South Extractive Company Limited, the region had been overrun by illegal miners and criminal elements, severely affecting security and community life. The area had faced numerous challenges, including kidnappings and other violent crimes.

The establishment of the Special Mining Marshals by the Federal Government in 2024 marked a turning point in the region’s struggle. The marshals were able to successfully clear the area, restoring order and securing the safety of legitimate miners. Following the operation, they established a 24-hour surveillance system, which allowed legitimate miners to resume operations, including road construction and logistical deployments for exploration. This action has had a profound impact on the community, significantly reducing criminal activities.

However, illegal miners and bandits regrouped in three separate locations about 2 kilometers from the secured area. In response, the marshals launched another coordinated operation, once again clearing the area and securing the mining site. Their efforts not only ensured the safety of legitimate miners but also created job opportunities for local youths, boosting both government revenue and community development.

Traditional rulers in the area have praised the marshals for their efforts, describing their work as life-changing. Dr. Adekunle Oladele, President of the Nigerian Geological Society, also commended the marshals for their dedication, noting a significant increase in compliance with mining regulations. “While arrests of illegal miners are counted, the number of compliant operations has increased dramatically,” Dr. Oladele remarked, emphasising the success of the marshals’ approach.

North South Extractive Company Limited also expressed gratitude, recognising the professionalism of the marshals and their role in safeguarding operations. Commander Onoja reassured that the marshals would continue their work to create a secure environment for legal miners. “We are committed to ensuring that illegal mining is eradicated,” he stated.

The latest operation has already led to the shutdown of several illegal mining sites, numerous arrests, and the confiscation of mining equipment, which has further disrupted illegal mining activities. Industry stakeholders are optimistic that the continued efforts of the Special Mining Marshals will lead to a more sustainable and prosperous mining industry. They have called for greater support, urging the government to provide the marshals with the resources needed to effectively fulfil their mission.

As the crackdown continues, there is growing hope that Nigeria’s mining sector will soon be free from illegal mining, encouraging further investment and growth in the industry—a commitment that NSCDC Commandant General Dr. Abubakar Ahmed Audi mni is determined to uphold.
