The Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS) has emphasised that solutions to Nigeria’s challenges in mining, energy, water, and construction already exist but are hindered by poor funding and ineffective policy implementation.
Speaking at a pre-press briefing in Abuja, NMGS President, Prof. Akinade Olatunji, stressed the urgency of addressing these issues. He highlighted the upcoming 60th Annual International Conference and Exhibition (AICE), scheduled for February 16, 2025, at Chida International Hotel, Utako, Abuja, as a platform to showcase innovations for sustainable development.
“The importance of utilising the tools and solutions from these fields will be on full display at this conference,” Olatunji stated. “We urge the Nigerian public to appreciate the need to leverage available resources in solving developmental challenges in these sectors.”

Themed “Transformation of the Mineral, Energy, Water, and Construction Sectors through Innovations,” the conference will feature experts presenting cutting-edge solutions in energy, solid minerals, oil and gas, construction, water, environment, and agriculture. Academics will also share research on sub-themes such as resource management, value addition, geoscience applications, and commercialization of geo-heritage resources.
“The Nigerian nation is looking for solutions, and what we are saying as NMGS is that these solutions are here with us,” Olatunji affirmed. “Eminent individuals have been lined up to make presentations at this event.”
He assured that the conference would offer practical solutions for policymakers, industry leaders, and the general public.
Beyond technical sessions, the event will feature social engagements, including welcome cocktails, Fellows and Institutional Nights, an Awards Night, and a Variety Night. NMGS will also honor individuals showcasing excellence in geoscience and mining as Distinguished Ambassadors of the Society, with some members being conferred Fellowship of NMGS.
