The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, has announced that ongoing reforms under the current administration aim to establish Nigeria as a global mining hub.

Delivering the keynote address at the 2024 Nigeria Mining Week, themed “From Inside Out: Building the Mining Sector to be the Cornerstone of Nigeria’s Economy,” Dr Alake highlighted the government’s efforts to sanitise the sector, strengthen diplomatic relations, and attract investment, positioning Nigeria as a formidable player in the global mining industry.

Dr Alake provided updates on his 7-point agenda, revealing that the incorporation of the Nigeria Solid Minerals Corporation is nearing completion. He explained that this corporate entity will represent Nigeria internationally, serve as a partner for joint ventures, and optimise legacy brownfields.

He also outlined measures to address illegal mining, which include both enforcement and engagement. Through the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC)-led Mining Marshals, over 300 illegal miners have been arrested and are facing prosecution. Investigations into illegal mining sites have intensified, and enforcement measures are reshaping the previously unregulated mining value chain.

In parallel, the Ministry has encouraged artisanal miners to formalise their operations by forming cooperatives. Since Dr Alake assumed office, 250 artisanal mining cooperatives have been established, promoting legal and sustainable practices.

Looking ahead, the Federal Government plans to introduce a multi-agency Mining Marshals squad, comprising operatives from various security agencies and supported by satellite technology to monitor mining sites effectively.

To enhance Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global mining sector, the Ministry has established a state-of-the-art Centre of Excellence equipped with a Decision Support System. This centre leverages data analytics and artificial intelligence to guide informed decision-making, improve strategic planning, and ensure operational efficiency.

“This centre represents more than just our commitment to innovation; it drives transparency, accountability, and data-driven policy-making in the management of our mineral resources,” Dr Alake stated.

President Bola Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, praised Dr Alake’s efforts to revitalise the mining sector. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to responsible and efficient mining practices, positioning Nigeria as a leader in mining technology and economic growth under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
