The Nigerian Institute of Mining and Geosciences (NIMG) has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing mining operations in Nigeria by delivering state-of-the-art technology and producing highly skilled professionals.

Cutting-Edge Training for the Sector
Speaking to Voice of Nigeria, Professor Suleiman Hassan, the NIMG Director General, outlined the institute’s diverse training programs, which include courses in precious stone identification, gem cutting and polishing, mine instrumentation, and mining law. These programs feature practical, hands-on training designed to equip professionals with the necessary skills for the mining sector.
“Students undergo a six-month research component using our modern laboratories, which house equipment that surpasses what is available in many institutions globally,” Professor Hassan remarked.
He further highlighted the institute’s Postgraduate Diploma program in mining engineering, minerals exploration, and processing, an 18-month comprehensive course combining classroom lectures, fieldwork, and laboratory research. This initiative addresses the skills gap in Nigeria’s mining industry by reducing dependency on foreign expertise.
Unlocking Nigeria’s Mineral Wealth
Professor Hassan emphasized Nigeria’s vast mineral deposits, which exist across all states and local governments. Unlike petroleum, these minerals, formed through weathering processes, are inexhaustible.
He praised recent reforms by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, such as establishing the Mineral Corporation of Nigeria and formalising artisanal mining operations through cooperatives. “The Seven Points Agenda is a game-changer, ensuring sustainable growth and better inclusion for artisanal miners,” he added.
Shaping the Industry’s Future
Since its inception, NIMG has played a pivotal role as an international centre of excellence, fostering professionals who drive innovation and growth in Nigeria’s mining sector. Graduates from its programs are already making substantial contributions to government initiatives and private mining ventures, underscoring the institute’s impact on the industry.
As Nigeria seeks to diversify its economy, NIMG remains at the forefront, equipping its workforce to unlock the nation’s mineral potential and shape a sustainable future.
