The Nigerian government is set to drive unprecedented growth in the mining sector, positioning it as a fundamental pillar of the nation’s economy.
This was stated by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, during a press briefing on November 12, 2024, in Abuja.
The event previewed the upcoming 9th edition of Nigeria Mining Week, which will take place from November 18-20 at the Abuja Continental Hotel under the theme, “From the Inside Out: Building the Mining Sector to be the Cornerstone of Nigeria’s Economy.”
Dr. Alake outlined a series of transformational initiatives, such as launching lithium and rare earth processing facilities in Kwara, Kebbi, and Abuja by year-end, aimed at reducing dependence on raw material exports. These initiatives align with the “Renewed Hope Agenda” to localise value creation and drive economic growth. The Minister also underscored the critical role of high-quality geo-scientific data to bolster Nigeria’s appeal as a mining destination, supported by key policies like the formation of the Nigerian Solid Minerals Company, the introduction of Mining Marshals to combat illegal mining, and enhanced satellite monitoring capabilities.
Dr. Alake emphasised that Nigeria Mining Week 2024 would unite investors, policymakers, and industry leaders to explore Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards, financing models, and Nigeria’s position in the global mineral value chain. “This year’s event sets a new standard for mining in Nigeria, aiming to secure a place for the sector in our national development strategy,” he said.
Representing Dr. Mary Ogbe, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Ijeoma Idika, Director of Human Resource Management, underscored that the Mining Week fosters innovation essential to Nigeria’s economic aspirations. She expressed optimism about the sector’s potential, stating, “A robust mining industry can be a catalyst for economic resilience and opportunity.”
Dr. Ogbe also highlighted the media’s role in raising public awareness of Nigeria’s mining progress, remarking, “Your coverage illuminates our achievements, highlights our challenges, and amplifies the aspirations we hold for a sustainable, vibrant mining sector.”
Dele Ayanleke, President of the Miners Association of Nigeria (MAN), represented by Mr. Tope Adebanjo, hailed Nigeria Mining Week as a key platform for assessing the industry’s advancement and shaping future goals. He expressed confidence that the 2024 event would attract stakeholders, showcase investment opportunities, and bolster the sector as a vital component of Nigeria’s economic growth.
