A general trend of lack of concern for community development was observed in commodity dependent regions including Africa, Asia and America. Nigeria’s vast mineral resources offer the potential to drive economic growth and uplift marginalized communities. However, to achieve this, it is essential to adopt a community-centric approach to mining. By involving local communities in the mining process, it is possible to create sustainable development and minimize social conflicts. One of such ways is to implement community Development Agreements. Some countries, like Liberia, use a model mine development agreement that requires a Community Development agreement other governments, have a model CDA that serves as a template for outline requirements for CDAs, in very general to more specific terms, in national or subnational more specific terms, in national or subnational legislation.Nigeria’s legislation does not adequately cover community development. Despite efforts made by the Nigerian government to revise existing CDAs there is still a long way to go in terms of implementation. Effective community engagement requires transparent communication, benefit-sharing agreements, and capacity building programs. Mining companies should prioritise local employment, procurement of goods and services from within the community, and investment in infrastructure development. Additionally, supporting education and healthcare initiatives can improve the overall well-being of the community. While challenges such as land disputes and environmental concerns may arise, collaborative partnerships between mining companies, government agencies, and communities can help to address these issues. By prioritising the needs of local people, Nigeria can harness the power of its mineral wealth to create a more equitable and prosperous society.
