The Nigerian Union of Mine Workers (NUMW) has issued a strong appeal to the Federal Government to prioritise the safety, welfare, and rights of mine workers across the country. This follows rising reports of occupational hazards, poor working conditions, and lack of adequate health coverage in Nigeria’s mining sector.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Nigerian Mining, the President of the Union, Comrade Hamza Mohammed, emphasised the urgent need for a comprehensive health insurance scheme tailored specifically for mine workers –many of whom operate under life-threatening conditions daily.

“Mine workers are the backbone of the mining industry, yet they are often exposed to risks that endanger their health and well-being. The government must take concrete steps to protect their rights and ensure they are treated with dignity,” he said.
The union also urged the enforcement of existing laws that safeguard mine workers’ rights. This includes compelling mining companies to provide safe working environments, proper training, and essential protective equipment –while highlighting the necessity of health insurance coverage for occupational hazards.
The union’s Secretary-General, Mustapha Yahaya, added:
“Mine workers are prone to occupational diseases and injuries. Health insurance is critical to ensuring they receive proper medical care. We urge the government to collaborate with mining companies to make this a reality.”
NUMW further stressed that health insurance would not only benefit workers but also extend support to their families in the event of accidents or illnesses, ensuring financial protection and access to healthcare.
They also called for broader social protection, including pension schemes and compensation for work-related injuries or illnesses.
The union’s call to action underscores the need for comprehensive reforms in the mining sector. Enforcing safety regulations, empowering regulatory bodies, and establishing health insurance schemes are essential steps toward safeguarding mine workers’ rights and well-being.
As Nigeria continues to harness the economic potential of its mining industry, prioritising the health and safety of its workers remains paramount.
