The Lagos State Safety Commission has urged sand miners and dredgers to prioritize safety at their work sites. Director-General Lanre Mojola made the appeal on Monday during a one-day stakeholders’ meeting with dredgers and miners across Lagos State. Mojola emphasized that safeguarding lives and property is essential, as outlined in the law that established the Lagos State Safety Commission, particularly in relation to dredging and mining. He called on all stakeholders to ensure no lives are lost during these activities.
“As we can see, some have suffered injuries, and others have tragically lost their lives due to compromised safety practices at various sites. We’re here today to discuss ways to foster responsible behavior and safety measures on our sites,” Mojola stated.
Abiola Koseegbe, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, represented by Shomilewo Okikiola, stressed the importance of a safe and resilient Lagos, underlining the need to protect lives and property at dredging and mining sites. Koseegbe urged miners and dredgers to adhere to established safety protocols from the commission and sister agencies.

He said, “The Lagos State Safety Commission has set guidelines for all dredgers and miners, as safety cannot be overlooked or underestimated in our dredging and mining operations.”
Dr. Tarzan Balogun, National President of the Association of Tourist Boat Operators and Water Transportation in Nigeria, appealed for a standby safety boat to ensure safety checks and balances at mining and dredging sites.
