The Kogi State Government has suspended all mining activities in the state due to the influx of bandits and miscreants involved in several mining-related operations.

According to the Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, Bashiru Gegu, the decision to suspend mining activities followed the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Kogi State Governor, Usman Ahmed Ododo.

Speaking with reporters after the meeting, Gegu said the ministry will begin profiling legal mining companies in the state.

“This is to enable the state to have accurate mining data,” the Commissioner explained. “A total cleanup of the sector will go a long way in minimising or eradicating criminality altogether.”

He added that the state will work in accordance with established regulations and collaborate with Federal Mines Officers and security agencies. “The state will not tolerate any form of infiltration or illegal mining activities. We urge all mining companies to bear with the state as we work to curb insecurity.”
