Ghana’s Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, is set to participate as a speaker at the upcoming Mining in Motion Summit, reaffirming the government’s dedication to environmentally sustainable and innovation-driven mining practices.

Hon. Muhammed’s presence at the summit highlights Ghana’s push to integrate scientific research and cutting-edge technology into the mining sector, aligning resource extraction with broader national development and environmental conservation goals.

The Minister has been leading efforts to establish international partnerships with both public and private stakeholders, aimed at introducing science-based solutions to support sustainable mining operations. Earlier this year, in April, he held talks with Park Kyongsig, South Korea’s Ambassador to Ghana, focusing on collaboration to address environmental damage caused by illegal mining. These discussions explored ways to harness Korean expertise to rehabilitate affected water bodies and tackle underlying environmental challenges.

In February 2025, Hon. Muhammed reaffirmed Ghana’s strategy to harness home-grown innovation as a catalyst for economic transformation. With mining playing a central role in the country’s economy — gold exports brought in $11.6 billion in 2024, accounting for 57% of total export earnings — the sector remains pivotal to growth and development.

To modernise the industry, the Minerals Commission of Ghana is upskilling young professionals in advanced technologies such as drone operations, which are increasingly being used for monitoring and automation in the sector.

Ghana is also making strides in sustainable mining practices through the World Bank-backed Ghana Landscape Restoration and Small-Scale Mining Project. This initiative targets land rehabilitation and promotes responsible mining among artisanal and small-scale miners, ensuring long-term environmental resilience and inclusive growth.

At the Mining in Motion Summit, Hon. Muhammed will join mining experts, academics and civil society actors to share ideas and shape the future of mineral governance in Ghana. The event, supported by the World Bank and the World Gold Council, is spearheaded by the Ashanti Green Initiative under the leadership of Oheneba Kwaku Duah, a prince of the Ashanti Kingdom.
