Seventeen people have been arrested in Samreboi, located in Ghana’s Western Region, for their alleged involvement in illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.
The arrests were carried out on May 25, 2025, by the Special Police Anti-Galamsey Taskforce from the National Police Headquarters. Among those detained were seven Chinese nationals and ten Ghanaians. All suspects were swiftly transferred to Accra to assist with further investigations.

The operation forms part of a broader crackdown on illegal mining in the region, particularly in areas such as Aowin Tano and Tano Anwia near Enchi, where unauthorised mining activities pose a serious threat to forest reserves and water resources.
The Ghana Police Service reaffirmed its strong commitment to the national campaign against illegal mining and stated it would continue to intensify enforcement efforts to safeguard the country’s natural environment.
