The First Lady of Niger State, Hajiya Fatima Umaru Bago, has called for greater public awareness to address the dangers posed by unregulated mining in Nigeria. Her appeal comes in the wake of a devastating dynamite explosion in Sabon Pegi, Mashegu Local Government Area, which claimed lives and destroyed property.
Speaking at the distribution of a ₦100 million donation from Senator Oluremi Tinubu to the affected families, Mrs Bago stressed the need for caution when handling hazardous materials. She also revealed plans to work alongside various ministries to educate communities on the risks of illegal mining, which has been linked to falling school enrolment rates and other social issues.

Reaffirming the Niger State government’s dedication to the welfare of its citizens, Mrs Bago assured the victims’ families of continued financial support. In addition to monetary assistance, relief items such as food supplies, mattresses, and blankets have been provided to help those affected rebuild their lives.
She expressed her gratitude to Senator Tinubu for her prompt intervention, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing such crises.
Meanwhile, the state’s Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Ahmed Baba Suleiman Yumu, commended both Governor Umaru Bago and Nigeria’s First Lady for their swift and compassionate response to the disaster.
