The Edo State Government has partnered with the Women in Mining Association to promote sustainable practices and prioritise health and safety in the mining sector.

This collaboration took centre stage at a one-day seminar themed “Environmental Hazards in Mining Sites and Health Management for Miners,” held at the Ministry of Mining’s Conference Hall in Benin City.

The event brought together key stakeholders including Hon. Andrew Ijegbai, Edo State Commissioner for Mining; Mrs. Omoruyi Ese Martina, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry; officials from the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals; geologists; and civil servants from relevant departments.

Commissioner Ijegbai commended the initiative and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting women in the mining industry.
He described the seminar as a vital platform to confront industry challenges and improve mining standards across the state.

Mrs. Omoruyi praised Governor Okpebholo for his proactive leadership, highlighting his approval of funds for safety kits and the expansion of oversight on mining operations.

“Such actions demonstrate the state’s commitment to reducing risks and fostering responsible mining,” she said.

Chief Mrs. Omo Amadasun, National Financial Secretary of the Women in Mining Association, stressed the importance of putting miners’ health and safety above profits.
She called for regular medical check-ups, thorough site assessments, and better regulation to avoid incidents such as cave-ins.

“We must prioritise miners’ health and safety over profit,” she said.

The seminar also featured technical lectures on environmental safety and risk management. Dr. Mrs. Joy Iyen Akhigbe, Permanent Secretary in the Head of Service’s office, urged participants to strengthen communication on safety protocols and ensure stricter regulatory enforcement.

In her closing remarks, Edo State Coordinator of Women in Mining, Mrs. Jennifer, expressed gratitude to the Ministry for its ongoing support. She encouraged continued collaboration to achieve safer and more responsible mining practices in the state.
