Fourteen individuals arrested for engaging in illegal mining at Akyem Muoso in Ghana‘s Eastern Region have each been granted bail of GH¢350,000 by the Koforidua Circuit Court B.
As part of their bail conditions, each of the accused persons must present two sureties, one of whom is required to justify the bail with movable property.
The arrests were made on Thursday,May 15, 2025, during an operation conducted by the Eastern South Regional Police Command. The suspects were arraigned in court the following day, Friday, 16 May.
A statement issued by the Ghana Police Service on Monday, May 19, confirmed the seizure of a pump-action shotgun from one of the suspects, Zuberu Nuhoho, who was unable to provide legal documentation for the weapon.
In addition to the firearm, police recovered two excavator control boards from the mining site as part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining, commonly known as ‘galamsey’, in the area.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing and reiterated their commitment to cracking down on unauthorised mining operations across the country.
