The Comoros has officially returned 28 gold bars to Madagascar, marking the conclusion of a smuggling scandal that strained relations between the neighbouring Indian Ocean nations.
The gold, weighing 49 kilograms (108 pounds), was seized at the Comoros’ main airport in 2021 from three individuals attempting to board a flight to Dubai. The discovery exposed a smuggling route from Madagascar to the Comoros via boat.

Following the incident, two Malagasy suspects were extradited to Madagascar for trial, while five Comorans, including an airport director and a customs officer, were arrested and sentenced to prison in 2022. However, the Comoros retained possession of the gold, prompting Madagascar to suspend air and sea links with its neighbour.
A joint statement from both governments confirmed the return of the gold, crediting legal proceedings and diplomatic negotiations for resolving the dispute. The statement emphasised the nations’ commitment to maintaining strong bilateral ties and working together to combat illegal smuggling.
