Illegal mining activities continue to thrive in local communities, creating a divide between those who live in wealth and those who suffer from poverty and insecurity. This is particularly evident in Iwajowa Local Government Area of Oyo State, where the presence of illegal miners exacerbates these social issues.

Despite efforts from the local council to enforce regulations, the mining company involved has not complied, continuing its operations unchecked. This has led to concerns over the growing implications of these activities, not only for the local community but for the broader state.

The Oyo State Government has made it clear that it will take strong action against illegal mining, alongside addressing other security challenges within the state. This commitment was made following a recent security meeting, as communicated by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Security Matters, Fatai Owoseni. Barrister Aborisade, a legal expert, asserted that this move is expected, as it is the government’s duty to protect public safety and address threats that contribute to insecurity. He emphasised that while the federal government holds the authority to licence mining companies, it is the state’s responsibility to ensure the safety and stability of its communities. If illegal activities contribute to rising tensions and insecurity, it is entirely appropriate for the state government to take a firm stand against such practices.
